Krug at An Event Apart
Steve Krug, of usability fame, gave a good solid talk at An Event Apart Boston. I’ve read Don’t Make Me Think several times, and always discover new ideas. It was cool to see the author speak, and in person too. And while the talk was good, is was even better to see him in action at the end of day 2 during the site critiques. I really like his common sense approach, and willingness to share his ideas.
In some ways it reminds me of Penn and Teller’s shows where they debunk the idea of magic and mystics, and then pull off a really cool trick that you know if a fake, but it still is amazing. Its funny because I just got a flyer from another usability expert today who will remain nameless (but the name is kind of like a TV ratings company). But I went to this other usability event a couple of years ago and was very disappointed. I saw a lot of powerpoint slides telling me things without proving anything. And if I wanted to see the research and other backup I could buy the studies for a couple of g’s each, in addition to the handsome sum I’d already paid to attend — no thanks. I’ll take a little Krug common sense over that any day.
