A2K Session 1

So I actually made it to the Access to Knowledge (A2K) conference on Friday.  In the first session the discussion surrounded what the term really means and where the A2K movement comes from.  Some ideas I took away from this:

  • When talking about A2K patented works are as important as copyrighted works.
  • Through the work to make medicines available to undeveloped countries there are some lessons that might inform copyrighted works.
  • There is real danger is making value judgments on which knowledge needs access.  A couple of times presenters mentioned textbooks, which like Aids drugs is clearly important to have access to.  But in the humanities I worry when we start to consider certain types of works as more critical than others.
  • There is a really cool grassroots music business model emerging in Brazil with technobrega.
OpenBusiness » Blog Archive » Tecnobrega shows off an open business model
  • There are a number of people interested in working inside the system to negotiate deals with knowledge ‘owners’ to make their works more freely available, and it sounds like some progress is being made.
  • This is a big and mult-headed topic
