Adobe CS3 Install problems

OK, after SIX HOURS of work I think I finally have the new Adobe CS3 design suite of programs installed.  Maybe its just me, but it seems that Adobe could have put just a little more thought into their installer.  Some thoughts:

  • From past installs I sort of expected that the program wouldn’t upgrade any existing versions but instead install the new versions in addition to the existing.  This strikes me as really stupid — maybe somebody wants to keep both so give them an option to retain the existing, but for most of us, who needs the old?  Its not like they don’t take up LOTS of disk space.
  • But what I didn’t expect was the presence of the CS2 versions would cause specific program installs to fail and make the whole suite not function — even dumber!
  • And the installer takes over an hour to run and don’t expect to use your computer for anything else during that time.
  • From some forum posts I found it seems that the presence of Flash player 8 also causes problems — but isn’t the penetration of that player over 90%?  Boy if that’s true that will cause a lot of people grief — dumber still.
  • So I installed once, but used my computer for other stuff during the installation and it failed.  I figured that’s what caused the issue.  So I ran the installer again — another couple of hours, still no go.  So I took another hour to uninstall all the CS2 and Macromedia programs.  And then ran the installer again.  Another 90 minutes later it looks OK so far.

And I’m not the only one who has had trouble.  The link below is a helpful listing from others who have had install issues and some fixes.  Luckily I didn’t need to dig in as deep as some of these folks, but still I’m pretty annoyed at the whole process.  Come on Adobe, we really expect better from you guys.  ESPECIALLY for a program that retails at $1,799!!!

None of these fixes from the Adobe site work for me. I dont even think they know the true root of all these issues. The most important issue for me is after install, i get 2 errors in the install. I am sure this is what is causing the problems. I am sure i am leaving parts of older versions/files on my cpu everytime i install CS3. How can one find all these files and delete them? They are everywhere!!

WTF. Installed cs3 on a virgin xp machine- worked flawlessly. froze machine w/ deep freeze. installed autocad2008, which also installs flash and it f#$#%$ed up cs3 even though on a frozen machine.

WHY, in the name of all that’s digital, would a company’s own free flash player corrupt an entire suite of very expensive SW?

can anyone say BETA? Hell, I bet that even the beta testers reported this big flaw. portable cs3 looking like better option- no install required- but makes it tougher to use plugins.

I got work to do on a deadline and don’t need this shit tonight.

I throw down the gauntlet of challenge to all you hackers, crackers and jackers out there- crack this flexnet licensing scheme ( or should i say scam) so we can use the sw we paid for.

I attempted to install Adobe product on virgin machine with complete erase/install of OS. Put in the administrator PW and that was that. End of install. Log was not helpful. Called Adobe - two hours later nothing was resolved, tried all their klugy workarounds like font disabling, etc. The american tech support at least tried. India suggested I ‘borrow’ someone else’s install disk and try that one!

I don’t think Adobe understands QA process, doesn’t care that we spend lots of $$ and lots of time trying to get their products to work. I can’t recommend that ANY of my clients get involved with AIR or, if possible, avoid buying Adobe altogether!
