WordPress as CMS

I am currently partner on a project where we are using WordPress as a CMS for a web site redesign. My strategy so far has been focused on using the pages for the regular content and leaving the posts for news items. It has taken quite a bit of hacking, and plug-in searching, but I have it working.

The navigation is all based on categories, not the regular page hierarchy. Two plugin’s have been really useful putting this together. The Category Page Plugin lets a page be designated as the landing page for a specific category. So if you click on the ‘About’ category this default page gets returned along with the listing of all matching articles. The other plugin, Page Category Plus, allows pages to be assigned to categories. So now both posts and pages can be assigned categories.

But after all that work I heard about this pending article on the WordPress codex, which makes a very good case for keeping most content in the POSTS area. And an excellent point it is too. The article itself needs some work, but there are some good ideas on the whole CMS approach. I’ll post more on my specific design process once the site goes live. For now check out the Codex article:

By allowing the majority of the articles on a site to be used as posts and not Pages, control over what is displayed where, when, and how increases.

Digg!
