I’ve been thinking about what blogging really is, especially as Yale starts its own launch of a school-wide blogging tool. There are plenty of descriptions about how to set up blogs, how to share your RSS feeds, etc. But I think a lot of these make the mistake of focusing on the blogging experience itself.

I have been experimenting with blog software for a couple of years now, but really feel that I’ve become a "blogger" within the last 6 months. And what helped me make the leap was that I discovered a newsreader, and started reading a lot of other blogs. It started with just a handful, and I’m now up to 64. And as an active reader of blogs, I now have a better sense of how to write. And more importantly the ideas, links, news items, and other information I pick up from my fellow bloggers inspires and informs my own writing. So I think in promoting blogging one also needs to promote the reading side of this read/write web equation.
