The future of email

I’ve seen a couple of articles over the last week, questioning the future of email. But for all its faults it just works so darn well. It doesn’t matter what email client you use, or what email server software your service provider uses, if I send an email mail I am pretty confident that it will reach the intended recipient. It works on all types of computers and mobile devices. Even instant messaging, which has been around for a while, can’t claim this interoperability. So email isn’t going anywhere quickly!

I’ve struggled with how best to make the site content accessible.  My personal style is a little eclectic, with posts appearing when the mood strikes, written about what interests me at that moment.  So the standard monthly archive sidebar element does not seem very helpful.

WordPress 2.6

I just made the update to 2.5, and it looks like 2.6 is right around the corner. The update to 2.5+ is pretty big, with database changes and a bunch of other stuff. But in normal WordPress fashion the actual update process is painless. I use a lot of plug-ins, and had been holding off in fear that some would get broken in the update — but all was good.

Yale’s solution to assigning movie viewing

Faculty requests for ways to integrate film and video into their teaching resources are getting more common in our school. From a purely technical point getting digital video into students’ hands is getting easier, but still tricky. Keeping the energy required to go from physical media to faculty assignment to student viewing down to a level of minimal fuss ain’t easy. And staying true to copyright restrictions makes it trickier still. This solution is a great step towards addressing those concerns:

RSS use

I have been running a survey of aerospace web sites as part of a design project. And I’m surpised to find that out of some 20 NONE are using RSS to feed news items. This includes big government agencies like the FAA, who have important, timely information to distribute..
