While in NYC this week for a 2 day PHP class, I ran over to see this exhibit of Internet-based artwork:
Rhizome ArtBase 101
I enjoyed the exhibit, although I was a little disappointed to find that the displays weren’t hooked up live to the Internet. It struck me as odd to see Internet-based artwork in a gallery where they weren’t connected to the Internet. This one was not in the exhibit, but it is from the www.rhizome.org site and is live:

The final day of the Collaborative Technologies Conference was terrific. Panelists included Joshua Schacter, the creater of del.icio.us and Matt Mulleweg, creator of WordPress . Peter Thoeny, creator of TWiki was around on a number of panels as well. It was great to see the faces, hear the thoughts, and have a chance to chat with the people behind these mainstays of the Read-Write web. In all cases they seemed delighted and amazed at how the seeds they planted have grown through the willing contributions of so many around the world. The consensus here at the Collaborative Technologies Conference is that, as a collaborative tool, email stinks. Here are some of its faults:
There is too much of it
It is indiscriminate — everyone gets CC’d on everything
There is no discussion trail — the conversation gets scattered as people respond to emails which end up in multiple inboxes
File attachments are a pain — no version control — do I have the most recent version — if I change the document what happens to other people’s changes?
Spam, Viruses, Worms, etc.
Every email has the same priority

I’m here at the Collaborative Technologies Conference at the lovely Chelsea Piers in the Big Apple. Yesterday’s sessions started with a talk by MIT’s Tom Malone. The topic of his talk, and his recently published book, concerns his contention that we are on the verge of a revolution in our work environments. Technology is starting to make it possible to enjoy the economies of scale, while also having a high degree of personalization, customization and individual freedom. His argument is quite compelling and is already apparent in such examples as Wikipedia and Ebay. Read for yourself and participate in the Wiki:
