In a recent report McKinsey looked at success factors for business transformation efforts. No big surprise — higher levels of employee engagement and empowerment are directly correlated to the ultimate success of the change program. It is nice to have the statistics to back up what most of us would expect.
Living Stories is an interesting new tool from Google. Coupled with the WordPress plugin it will allow the creation of a site centered around a particular news story. You can run the code without WordPress, but as with most things WordPress it makes setup much easier. The tool provides a running stream of news articles on the story. It also provides summaries and provides nice features such as auto-collapsing stories you’ve already seen.
Casey Bisson’s work showcases what a flexible tool WordPress can be. Last year he spoke on his work on the WordPress powered library catalog system Scriblio. This year he spoke on some of his other WordPress plug-in projects including a 100% widget powered WordPress theme that is transforming the Plymouth State University web site. Jane Wells from Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, and a primary contributor to WordPress’ ongoing development plans, talks about the latest happenings and directions in WordPress-land.
The photo here is nothing more than a group of 12 light emitting diodes (LED) wired together and being controlled by an Arduino controller. The wiring is an example of Charlieplexing — who knew that was even a word? This is a project I’m working on as part of a physical computing workshop I’ve been participating in for the last couple of weeks. And this simple experiment represents 4 or 5 hours worth of my time!

A while back the PBS Frontline series ran a special entitled Digital Natives. If, like me, you missed it you can view the program streamed off their web site. And it is well worth the time. It starts out sort of feeling like a standard case of adult worrying that the new generation is somehow headed to ruin because they don’t appreciate the values adults consider important. But the program is more than that, so stick it out through the end.
