Flickr is not open source software — it is owned by a huge corporation with the standard profit motives. And one that has had a tough last year and perhaps a questionable future. But it is also a very useful and flexible tool that organizations are growing to depend on — and build quite a bit of intellectual value in.
What Flickr does offer is a robust application programming interface which makes it possible to access your data in all sorts of ways. And with programs such as those listed below you could easily take your photos out of Flickr and move them into another photo sharing site — or start hosting them in your own managed application. This is the type of open interface and access that all web services need to offer, and the type of thing that must be a consideration when considering a new service.
