Campus Smart Phone use is up

Statistics from recent Ball State student survey:

• 27% own a smart phone
• 99.7% have a mobile device
• text messaging beats email usage
• 62% admit to texting in class (but how many more really do…)
• 72% use camera phone
• 39% use phone to take and share video

Strategies for delivering student applications need to include mobile delivery — and probably not a bad idea for staff/faculty apps too.  We’re behind, but our use is growing too.

Smart Phones Take the Lead — Campus Technology

A MARCH 2009 BALL STATE UNIVERSITY (IN) STUDY of 300 university students’ mobile communications habits was undertaken as part of an ongoing twice-yearly survey of college students

Survey finds smart phones transforming mobile lifestyles of college students

Allowing students to develop interactive programming is part of Ball State’s Emerging Media Initiative (EMI), a $17.7 million investment focusing the university’s historic strengths in this area to accelerate benefits to the state of Indiana and give students innovative and entrepreneurial opportunities.
