• Commercial vs. Open Source LMS

WebCT seems quite eager to jump on board the open-source bandwagon, at least as described in this week’s Campus Technology newsletter (www.campustechnology.com). They said:

WebCT said chief technology officer Chris Vento is a founding member and co-chairman of the IMS Global Learning Consortium’s Tools Interoperability Working Group, which aims to make CMS platforms and tools interoperate whether or not they are open source or commercial products.

At the Blackboard presentation I attended last week, they also made a big point of discussing how they weren’t in competition with open-source solutions, like Sakai, but were eager to provide tools to complement and integrate those software packages.

I think its great if the open source threat challenges them to keep their innovations/development and service well ahead of the curve. When the competition was just WebCT vs. Blackboard, I think they got a little “sleepy.” Time will tell how serious they are at integration, and probably even more telling if they can keep ahead of the open-source solutions. We’ll see…
