Athletes cross train in other sports or training regimes to stay in shape. Musicians will pick up a new instrument or try a new music genre to get fresh ideas. And if you want to keep your technology chops sharp it is a good idea to regularly try out something totally new. Sample a new operating system — challenge yourself to do a project with all open source software — find a way to communicate for a week without using email — anything to break yourself out of the comfortable way of solving problems. Why? Not because it is always comfortable, but as the exercise cliche goes, no pain no gain.

more importantly, I need to put myself at “square one”. I need to leave
my comfort zone, parachute down into the unknown jungle with nothing
but a few sketchy tutorials, and claw my way to a new civilization.
Why? Because that’s what I ask my students to do every day in the
