• Higher-ed top tech challenges for 2009

It is the time of year for lists.  This one from Educause seems pretty obvious (as stated in the comments to the Chronicles’ post) — at least obvious to technology-focused early adopters.  Of all these I think #5 will be the most relevant for the coming future.  Application of technology has helped save costs and provide better service in other industries — why not higher-ed?  It can be done by adopting the strategies of successful web application projects:

    • Less is more feature set – project maintains a core set of code
    • Pluggable architectures – allows external developers to add functionality
    • Reliance on open source software from vibrant, active communities
    • Use of PHP in combination with the MySQL database engine
    • Frequent, incremental updates/always beta mindset
    • Allow reuse of content and core functionality via technologies such as XML/RSS and application programming interfaces (API).

Facebook, Flickr, Wikipedia, Wordpress and others have show that innovation can be delivered, cheaply and quickly.  More of this energy needs to be coming out of the higher-education area.
