McKinsey’s ideas on making the social web work

How to start a workplace social media/web 2.0 application?  In this article McKinsey weighs in with their suggestions.  They are :


1. Leadership from the top is required — even for what are at their core grassroots efforts
2. Successful user experiments need help to scale up
3. Needs to part of regular work — not something in addition to regular work.
4. Participation is driven by peer recognition, not money
5. Get the right users involved — often early adopter types
6. Balance freedom vs control — and be ready for a little discomfort

These ideas have been laid out by others, in places like wikipatterns.com, but maybe the McKinsey name will help an effort to get buy-in from your boss.  Can’t hurt.

Acceptance of Web 2.0 technologies in business is growing. Encouraging participation calls for new approaches that break with the methods used to deploy IT in the past. Company leaders first need to survey their current practices. Once they feel comfortable with some level of controlled disruption, they can begin testing the new participatory tools.
