Social networking is many things, but not always what people claim it is. At least according to this post by Nicole Ferraro on Internet Evolution. The myths are 1) I own my data, 2) I control my privacy 3) social networks are democratic, 4) they flatten hierarchy and 5) the affect social change.
I especially agree with points 1 and 2. If you want content you create to be under your control don’t put it in digital form. That includes email, web pages or a social network site. It is like a secret — its only secret if you don’t tell anyone. None of this means people shouldn’t participate in social networking. But for a company, school or other organization with an existing community I do think these cautions show the value in providing your own social networking alternatives.
