• Transparency from the CIO office via social media

Is social media worth the time for a busy technology executive? Yes:

    1. Transparency and Communication:  Probably the most obvious reason, provides a regular, less-formal way to introduce ideas and receive feedback from the community.  A blog format is  particularly good at forcing some type of regular schedule — i.e.  new post every Monday — although a smaller, less formal tool like Twitter — i.e.  at least two tweets a day — might be useful too.
    2. Lead by example:  Employees already use social media, both to discuss work and while at work.  Model the behavior you expect.
    3. Experience the good and bad of the technology:  How can you really judge new technology without direct experience?

Before you start learn from peer examples.  For instance start following fellow executive twitter accounts.  Or subscribe to the RSS feed from their blogs ( WesleyanRISDWISCMarc).  Then start small, with no formal announcement.  Tell a few key people and let the news spread organically.  Try to find current communication vehicle to give up in favor or your new social media — otherwise you’ll never find time for it.  Find an honest, informal voice for your communication.  Talk about small informal, yet still professional, things, such as comments on recent articles read.  Avoid big official announcements — leave those for traditional official channels.  And just remember — if U.S. President Barack Obama can find time for this stuff, you probably can too.
