It has been a long time since I thought about Furl and now it has gotten swallowed up. I actually find that I don’t even use my Firefox bookmarks very much these days — if I want to find something I just Google it. And in my casual observations I find many users do the same. For all the time my kids use the internet I don’t even think they know how to bookmark something. For key sites that I visit frequently the book mark saves time. But for adhoc searches I find my bookmarks get too hard to manage over time, and a Google search is faster and easier. With the added benefit of revealing the latest sources. The concept of social bookmarking sounds very attractive but in practice is it what the mainstream wants?
The Furl team is very pleased to announce that Furl has become part of Diigo.com. We worked hard to find Furl a home where loyal users like you could continue to benefit from best-of-breed social bookmarking and annotation tools. Hands down, Diigo.com was the winner due to its innovative approach to online research tools and knowledge sharing.
Social bookmarking and annotation service provider Diigo has acquired web page clipping and archiving service Furl from publicly listed search advertising network company LookSmart in exchange for equity. The deal is being pitched as a partnership but looks more like a smart decision from LookSmart to offload a property that had little to do with its core business and Diigo jumping on a relevant opportunity without having to spend any cash.
