I’ve been a long-time user of the FeedDemon RSS reader, coupled with the Newsgator web service and FeedDemon Go on my Blackberry. The beauty of this combination is I could read things on my Blackberry and ‘clip’ items of interest. Later, at my computer, I could give those items a closer reading, and with the FireFox extension ScribeFire easily quote them in a blog post. But nothing lasts forever, and the glue that held this all together, Newsgator, is gone at month’s end. Following their instructions I’ve moved to Google Reader with FreeRange on the Blackberry.
And it works EXCEPT I haven’t figured out how to mark items for later reading accessible from my computer. On the mobile I can mark items to read later, but those are only saved on the phone — not accessible directly in the Google reader account. I tried using the Google Reader mobile site, but again it doesn’t offer the features I came to rely on in FeedDemon Go! I’m sure I’ll figure it out, but I will miss Newsgator. FeedDemon is still available and is still an excellent client RSS reader.
I use NewsGator Go!, how do these announcements impact me? NewsGator Go! for BlackBerry and Windows Mobile will no longer be available for consumers as of August 31, 2009. We recommend the Google Reader mobile web application, or the FreeRange BlackBerry client application. These are free products and you can even transfer your NewsGator Go! RSS reading list to these alternative readers. To assist you with the migration, we have provided step-by-step instructions on our website.
