If you must (or even want) to use Microsoft Outlook, Xobni is a useful plugin for managing connections — now fresh out of beta and with a new release! I have been using Xobni for months now, and find it very helpful. In particular I like the integration with LinkedIn. If the email sender has a LinkedIn profile it will appear in the Xobni sidebar — really helpful for building your LinkedIn connections.

Xobni 1.7 starts Outlook 31 percent faster, with the option to have Xobni installed but not start with Outlook. Profiles now load 42 percent faster and there are more performance controls so users can control how often and how much data Xobni indexes.

The new, official version of the Xobni toolbar (previously covered here and here) is designed to uncover the “hidden” social network of the inbox. The software adds a sidebar to Outlook which adds profiles of the people you’re corresponding with and keeps track of related messages, phone numbers, and files exchanged. This latest version adds even more features and has better performance, too.
