Sure it is cool that Google has now released a beta of it’s dream web browser, but should we care? From a web developer perspective I kind of wish everyone just used the same browser (especially if it is Firefox 3!). It really makes me tired to thing that there is yet another browser I’ll be forced to test in.
And do real people care? Ask the average person what web browser they use on their computer and generally you’ll get a blank stare. What do they use on their iPhone, or other mobile device — an even blanker stare. User care about something that works — the technology behind it is of little interest. But then ask almost anyone how many cylinders their car engine has — they probably don’t know that either.
And what is the future of ‘web pages’ anyhow? Is it a rich interactive experience a-la Flash? Some minimal Ruby on Rails app that works great on a mobile device? Blogs? Facebook/LinkedIn? Some dedicated desktop AIR type thing? For those of us toiling in the trenches it can feel like a lot to wrap your head around. What leadership do we provide to our end-users, clients, etc?
For me any solution should certainly fit the need. But for an average web page I can’t see why anyone would go with the old fashioned static HTML page. In everyway it is the least flexible and forward thinking. For just a little extra work you can build a web site in a CMS, such as WordPress. This offers multiple paths to allow readers to access your site (i.e. RSS) plus plugins to access content off other sites (Flickr, LinkedIn.) It may not be a huge step, but it is a step in the right direction.
