Could this move by Boston College be part of a new trend? No more student email service? It is a real game changer, but once you think it through a little it makes perfect sense. Why burden students with another email account? — they already have one. And they still get the university address — first.last@theschool.edu — but it is just a forwarding link to their chosen email provider. So they get better service and the university can save some money on the service. Sounds like a win-win. If fact let them keep the address even post-graduation — isn’t a long term relationship with the school what we want?

Officials at Boston College have made what may be a momentous decision: they’ve stopped doling out new email accounts to incoming students. The officials realized that the students already had established digital identities by the time they entered college, so the new email addresses were just not being utilized. The college will offer forwarding services instead.
