A wiki page on Drupal Groups has a growing list of educational institutions running Drupal. I bet you could cross-check this list against similar listings for WordPress usage and find many of the same names. Using one doesn’t presuppose using the other. In fact both can be valuable pieces of the institutional web tool belt, serving a wide range of uses and users. The important thing to remember is we technology people care about these ‘plumbing’ issues. Normal people just want their web sites/applications to work.
I admit that I’ve had to work my way over a bit of a hump in ‘drupalizing’ myself. WordPress is such a comfortable and powerful application it has become my go-to tool for a lot of projects. But the more I dig into the details of Drupal the more I appreciate what a deep and flexible tool it is. It is not ‘better’ than WordPress — in fact I don’t see any value in trying to generally weight one over the other — Drupal is just different. And like any tool-set there are applications that would be better suited to one over the other. You CAN hammer nails with a screwdriver, but why would you when a hammer works so well? Open Source, pluggable architectures, active user communities, PHP/MySQL based, a corporate entity built around the tool (automattic.com/acquia.com) — the two have more in common than not.
