• Flickr and Facebook

I recently set up a facebook profile as part of a test of a new Firefox social plugin (which I haven’t actually gotten around to testing yet, but that’s another story.) In fact I’ve been meaning to dig around in Facebook for a while — most of our students are using it, so I might gain some insight into what makes the web work for them by using it.  I registered under my name (Randall Rode) so if you’re interested go ahead and see if you can find me.  Better yet, register yourself at facebook.com and add me as your friend!

One of our students already found me and made me his friend (how nice.) So I decided I should actually do something with the profile. It has a nice notes feature that I set to pull posts from this blog. And I found a handy Flickr2Facebook bookmarklet that lest you easily take a flickr photo and add it to your facebook photo album. I think I could have used the notes feature to pull from my flickr RSS feed, but they only allow one feed to be imported. It also seems that if people are looking for photos they’ll be looking in photos, not notes.

I certainly don’t feel the need right now to spend a lot of time in facebook, although if I get more friends maybe it will be worth it. But if I have my profile automatically grabbing other pieces of my digital life, and pulling them into a view that our students can see, that seems like a good example of web 2.0 in action!
