Google Apps, Mozy online backup, WordPress blogs, Amazon S3 — these services are growing more robust, are relatively inexpensive, and in these tight economic times very hard for department/unit business managers to ignore. In an Internet Evolution post, Dave Vellante advises that IT decision makers get ahead of the curve, get familar with the landscape, and “get some governance in place.” And simply prohibiting these services won’t hold back the flood. IT needs to lead, and become part of the solution — or risk being part of the problem.

Whatever you call it, cloud computing is rolling in — and it’s time for IT to see what’s coming and put some plans in place for how to deal with it, or suffer the consequences.
