Deep inside the RSS 2.0 spec has been an little-used capability — the ability to collect blog updates in a live, twitter-like feed. Who knew? The immediacy of Twitter does start to make RSS feeds feel a little slow. I do like the short-form of Twitter for live feeds. Live stuff needs to be short and to the point to have any use. But it is an interesting idea to see the possibility (and option) of live feeds extend outside the immediate Twitter universe — and kudos to WordPress for leading the way! Maybe Twitter clients like TweetDeck will add RSS Cloud features (although there could be some technical hurdles), or the RSS big boys like Google Reader. I added the Rss Cloud plugin to my blog — I guess I can cry “It’s Alive“.
WordPress Just Made Millions of Blogs Real-Time With RSSCloud
All blogs on the WordPress.com platform and any WordPress.org blogs that opt-in (using this plug-in) will now make instant updates available to any RSS readers subscribed to a new feature called RSSCloud…This is like the difference between checking your email every once in awhile and using a Blackberry to get new emails pushed to you as soon as they arrive. The subscription method of RSSCloud works more like Instant Messaging than the old method of polling feeds for updates each time you fire up your feed reader.
