If you are a regular reader of this blog you’ve no doubt noticed the rise in posts regarding mobile technologies. Well at least in the newfeeds I read that seems to be happening a lot these days. Here is my prediction – the desktop computer as we know it is on the way out. And laptops as simply a desktop replacement are on the way out too, although probably have a few more years. The functions of the desktop will split between mobile devices like phones and subnotebooks, smart internet devices like Tivo/Apple TV, and virtual desktops for running traditional applications that can be accessed from these devices. Maybe you’ll still have some type of keyboard/monitor unit on your desk at work, but it too will be running the virtual desktop.
Trends to watch over the next year? Mobile User Interfaces, dominated by iPhones Apps, mobile web application services and location awareness.
