The records company have decided to stop new lawsuits against file sharers and Apple has recently decided to offer all songs without copy protection. Does this signify the end of a chapter in the book of how the web is changing distribution models? Maybe. Hopefully other industries will learn from their mistakes — and the rise in sites offering recent television programs is a hopeful sign for that industry.
There is quite a tale to be told — too bad this book by Knopper doesn’t get a better review. I’ve linked to an excerpt too so you can decide for yourself. But perhaps the best lesson is for knowledge producers to keep current with the twists and turns of the web, and position themselves as leaders. You can’t hold back the tide, so you might as well get a surfboard.
