Students have active online lives outside of our institutions. In fact most of them show up with pre-existing gmail accounts, facebook pages and other digital lives. So why isn’t higher ed more plugged in to the discussions on OpenID? The audience for OpenID is our audience — young, mobile, active, connected. Why do we force them to learn a new id and password when they enter our domain? Is it soley tradition? Given the latest advances in OpenID, and Facebook’s adoption, it might be a good idea to get this on the university-IT radar. Even better, let’s save money by phasing out student email systems, local student identity system (in favor of openID), and focus on real innovation.
