Do you really want to remember one login for your Yahoo account, another for your GMail account, and another for Facebook? Well now if you are already connected to Yahoo, GMail or other OpenID providers you can be auto-logged in to your Facebook account. Here is how it works. Log into Facebook — go to SETTINGS — Select the Linked Accounts section and select the account to link to. A pop up window will take you to the site you pick and have you log in and asks for approval to link to Facebook. After that if, for instance you are checking your Gmail and you pop over to Facebook you’ll be automatically logged in.
If Facebook can make this leap, why not a college or university? Most students come in already having a Gmail account of their own — why not let them use that ID and password to access their university resources? Of course they’d need to set up their account first, just like a new user would need to do at Facebook. But once they link the accounts they’d be set. Maybe from a security standpoint a little risky at the moment, but something to watch.
The Dam Just Broke: Facebook Opens Up to OpenID
New Facebook users will now be able to create Facebook accounts using their Gmail credentials and existing users will be able to associate and thus log in with Gmail or any other OpenID account that supports “automatic login.”
