• OpenSolaris and PHP development

Already a couple of days into my OpenSolaris installation and I am loving it.  There have been continuing challenges — for instance I needed to do some under-the-hood configuration changes to get the suspend feature to work.  The open source music player Songbird is a great alternative to iTunes — but you need to download extra codecs to play mp3 files (it defaults to the open source oga format.)  And connecting a USB drive formatted with NTFS is touch — in fact I just gave up and reformatted it in FAT32.  But these are just little tests, and make it all a fun puzzle.  And my first introduction to the development tools is very positive.

The Sun Web Stack has apache, PHP, MySQL and Ruby, all nicely packaged.  And the NetBeans integrated development environment is great.  In the windows world I have struggled to find a development tool that really feels comfortable.  But with NetBeans, even in my first few little tests it seems to have many of the features I have been longing for — like smart autocompletion, connection to class files, and other cool features.  And a click of a button launches the app in the web browser.  And some good help resources — even a tutorial on creating a WordPress plugin!  This is going to be fun…
