• The new Skype

    Note from a faculty member:

    Dear Randy,

SKYPE IS AWESOME.  The camera worked perfectly and I think it’s time for the dept to purchase one of our own so we have it handy always.  This is a GREAT tool.   I have interviewed candidates so far this week from the comfort of my home office in: Brazil, Finland, London, and Singapore.  It’s truly remarkable.  D____ helped me get it set up.  It’s great.  I have a couple more to do next week.

    All best,

    L______

It is great how quickly things can change.  When reviewing Skype and alternatives this time last year our conclusion was it wasn’t worth the trouble.  But as per the note above things change.  So I’m getting together with our phone support people and we’re all going to figure out how Skype works, and how to deploy support to our faculty and staff.  Because if the rest have a similar reaction this will prove to be a really useful tool who’s time may have come.

    Positive:

    • Better video/easier to use
    • Improved Audio quality
    • Reduced lay time in conversation
    • Widely used service — good name recognition
    • Works on Mac or Windows
    • Can send files to other party during call
    • It is free for computer-to-computer calls

    Negative:

    • No group video conference — one-to-one sessions only
    • Limited Desktop sharing — mac only (coming to Windows soon?)
    • Charges for sending text messages to cell phones (other services don’t charge)

On Tuesday, after a year of public testing, the Skype team (now owned by eBay) released Skype 4.0 for Windows, which the company calls “the biggest new release in Skype’s history.”
