• WordPress 2.7

The newest WordPress release is now available, 2.7.  The administrative interface has completely changed, which I guess is a good thing — right?  I find it hard to get too excited about changing the admin interface all around again.  But then I use ScribeFire to do most of my posting — it is pretty unusual for me to create a new post directly in WordPress.  And in my line of work I use a lot of pretty lame admin panels, so I guess I don’t expect much from them.  But the folks at WordPress did do a fair amount of talking with users, usability testing, etc, which is not what you normally expect from an open source project — but then WordPress is a pretty special thing.

One big feature is the ability to heavily customize where things are in the admin panels.  The funny thing is that most users generally don’t take the opportunity to customize their programs.  Think how many people you know who’s browser opens to the default home page.  There are a couple of features I do think are pretty exciting.  Stick Posts now lets you select a post to always appear first in the list, regardless of its posting date.  I had this in my very first blogging tool, GreyMatter, and I remember missing it when I switched to WordPress.  The auto-upload feature for WordPress software is great, although I have been using the Automatic Update plugin for the last couple of years and found it very usable.  You can now also auto-install plug-ins, which is a great time saver.  No need to mess with FTP, unzipping, etc.

    Download and enjoy!

WordPress 2.7: If You Don’t Like It, Change It – ReadWriteWeb

it comes as little surprise that the latest release, WordPress 2.7 – codenamed “Coltrane” – has had a great deal of time and energy focused on improving that interface.

The first thing you’ll notice about 2.7 is its new interface. From the top down, we’ve listened to your feedback and thought deeply about the design and the result is a WordPress that’s just plain faster. Nearly every task you do on your blog will take fewer clicks and be faster in 2.7 than it did in a previous version.
